Wheat Variety
Test Results are In
(7.1.10)
The official Kentucky Wheat Variety Test results are now
available (in Excel tables) at
www.uky.edu/ag/WheatVarietyTest. A
summarized bulletin will be available at a later date.
According
to Bill Bruening, wheat variety test coordinator at the
University of Kentucky, no wheat variety testing program has
ever released results in June; we are 3 weeks ahead of the
norm.
"This
feat would not be possible with out the support (upgrading
combine technology) from KySGGA," said Bruening. "This is what
the growers wanted, and is truly a success story. Releasing
quality data in a timely fashion allows growers to make
variety selection decisions and maximize potential production
profitability. In the past, many variety selection decisions
were made before this data was available."
New Tool for Assessing Head Scab and DON Risk
(May 2010) Don Hershman, UK plant pathologist, says that
growers should pay careful attention to head scab risk for the
next 2 to 3 weeks (during wheat heading). An exciting new tool
can be used to help determine scab risk and need to spray a
fungicide:
www.wheatscab.psu.edu and click on "Risk map tool" and
then select Kentucky.
This disease forecasting model is made available by Penn State
University, Ohio State University, Kansas State University,
and the U.S. Wheat and Barley Scab Initiative. The model uses
real-time weather data from numerous National Weather Service
stations within each state. For Kentucky, weather data
included in the disease model have been significantly
“ramped-up” due to the addition of about 50 Kentucky Mesonet
weather stations (www.kymesonet.org).
