A
Kentucky-developed Soft Red Winter Wheat Variety
that offers farmers high performance and
more marketing flexibility at a great value
May 2009 Update - KySGGA entered into
an agreement with the University of Kentucky Wheat Breeding
program to release Pembroke in 2007 and then offered it for
sale in the summer of 2008. The goal was to streamline the
process of getting genetics into the hands of farmers by
removing the strings attached to technology. Farmers buying
the seed owned the technology outright. All seed was
registered. Seed could be saved, resold or reproduced without
violating patent restrictions.
KySGGA did not retain profit from the program.
Royalties were paid directly to the UK Wheat Breeding Program
to develop additional varieties.
So far, all of the goals of this program have
been met. The program sent over $50,000 to UK. The seed in
fields this year looks good. KySGGA is awaiting Pembroke’s
results in several public and private variety trials. Within
24 months, KySGGA will likely release another variety in a way
that keeps the same goals in mind. If you would like a list of
Pembroke retailers, contact KySGGA.

Purchasers free to produce and save seed for their own
operations

For more than a decade, the Kentucky Small
Grain Growers’ Association and the University of Kentucky
Wheat Science Group have been working together to develop and
release wheat technology that keeps farmers’ needs in mind. We
have focused our latest efforts on developing a wheat variety
and releasing it under the terms that hold PRODUCER
profitability as the priority. We envisioned genetics that
would reach the marketplace more quickly and at a lower cost.
Of equal importance is maintaining a product that could move
from farmer to farmer with fewer strings attached.
Our efforts created PEMBROKE.
