Call for 2023 Research Projects

The Kentucky Small Grain Growers Association is now accepting research proposals for the 2023-2024 growing season. Projects should be geared towards the research of small grain crops (wheat, barley, oats, rye, rice, and triticale).  We are looking for projects with novel approaches that will take us to the next level of yield and profitability.  We are expecting research that pushes the envelope on small grain production and the broader cropping systems.  Some of our guiding principles for research include the following:

  • satisfy human food and fiber needs;

  • enhance environmental quality and the natural resource base upon which the agricultural economy depends;

  • make the most efficient use of nonrenewable resources and on-farm resources and integrate, where appropriate, natural biological cycles and controls;

  • sustain the economic viability of farm operations; and

  • enhance the quality of life for farmers and society as a whole.

Based on the discussion of KySGGA Directors during their spring brainstorming meeting, greater weight will be given to proposals that address the following topics:

  • Revisit headcount per square yard

  • Fungicides – timing and efficacy – fine tuning for highest protection and yield

  • Sulfur – revisit recommendations

  • Opportunities to reduce winter fallow through use of cover crops, interceded legumes (while finding ways to avoid onions)

  • Nitrogen use efficiency

  • New small grain varieties – plant breeding including photo sensitive varieties

  • Compilation and analysis of weather data over the last 30+ years with the goal of identifying impacts to soils and erosion from more frequent and more intense rainfall events

  • Review and possible engagement on the YEN program

  • Soil Health

    • consider possible new crop rotations and impacts on soil biology

    • consider changing soil characteristics and new ways to provide nutrients to crops

    • new cover crop varieties, mixtures, and methods of planting and managing that improve soil health and prevent erosion

To apply for funding, submit a one-page executive summary of the proposed research including a general estimate of the project cost by June 30, 2023 to laura@kysmallgrains.org.  This year, KySGGA has established a research committee to review summaries and develop preliminary suggestions and feedback on proposals.
